Roman brawl....and some after effects!

Recently at work we've been using After Effects to give a little life to our drawings that appear in-game. I drew this Barbarian ritual camp and then added some effects, and I while it's very frustrating learning After Effects on the job it does feel rewarding when the video is finished. The quality of the video on the blog is not that good but you get the point. The Roman brawl scene was fun to do, and at work I was asked to do a step-by-step so I'll post that here too in case people are interested.

Barbarian Battlegrounds!

Finally released the new Barbarian Battlegrounds feature for Glory of Rome recently, so I can show some of the work I did for it. Drawing the Barbarian leader was one of the funnest things I've done so far, I had to take my time with him since he'll show up a lot in the Battlegrounds feature. There's more to show but I have to wait for it to get in the game :)

I took the Barbarian to a point where I'm pleased with it....for now. I'm considering painting him in a snowy background. I'm sure I'll look at it in few days and find things to change but now I need to finish this Akira clown bike member I started for a CGhub challenge that my coworkers were doing but I never got past the line drawing for the guy. The motorcycle should be fun to do too. I plan on doing it in a similar style to the Roman town crier I did at work, based on a head sketch done by Joy Ang and a pose from the town crier in the HBO show ROME.

This is some stuff I did recently for the Glory of Rome game on Facebook, it's been a really fun project and I hope to be able to show more stuff soon :)
The top two are scenes from the Coliseum and those I did on my own, the characters on the two battle scenes were done by the super talented Joy Ang, who worked freelance from Canada on our project. I had the pleasure of making the general look beat up and I did all the backgrounds.

I've been busy lately trying to plan my wedding, looking for a new car, working, and just the usual life stuff......so that means no real time to draw my own stuff (unless trying to design wedding invitations fits under that category, which I think does NOT). I've managed to squeeze these in mostly on lunch breaks at work, one is a sketch of a Roman soldier and the others are what I hope become the beginning of my own WW1 humans vs aliens project. I've been playing around with that idea since school and I have a lot more sketches in my sketchbook but I don't have a scanner at the moment.

I recently finished doing some freelance for an upcoming sci-fi game called Achron. It's in the style of game as Starcraft or Warcraft but it still has a ways to go until it's released. It was my job to create all the units and buildings for a certain alien race and these are some of the ones I did. This freelance gig was the most relaxing and easy going freelance job I've done because all they expected from me where 1 hour sketches over a period of over a month and a half and I could easily do it after work without having to stay up late. They were even kind enough to let me post these images and use any of them on my portfolio! Weird huh, a good freelance experience? Guess they DO happen.

Kingdoms of Camelot

I've been working on contract at Watercooler Inc for around a month and my job has been to re-do all the artwork for their Facebook game Kingdoms Of Camelot. The previous art was done by interns so they could get the beta out quickly and they felt it didn't look very appealing. These images show the recent art update for the environments, I still have to do a lot more as far as icons, soldiers, and characters so that will be released later. This is totally different than anything I've done before, having to draw things at a small scale and making them clear at sizes like 90x90 pixels. It's been really fun and seeing my actual art be the game is really cool.

Aircraft Carrier = Spaceship

I did a small freelance gig a few weeks back and the point of the whole thing was to turn the bridge of the USS Hornet (docked in Alameda) into a spaceship bridge for a movie trailer/pitch. However there were limitations because of the budget for this project so not too many modifications could be made, just a few CG things here and there along with the windows being covered in green board so later it couldbe made to look like outer space. The photo on top is the original that I was given and then what ended up being the space ship bridge along with some crew placement.

Dead Diver

I came across some images of old diving suits while doing some reference gathering online and for some reason an image of an undead old school diver drowning modern-day divers came to my head. Realizing that my morbid thoughts could lead to something I would enjoy drawing I quickly did a doodle and threw some color on it before I forgot about the whole thing. I plan on starting to work on this thing later this week. Should be entertaining.

I recently started a small freelance job where I have to figure out what some hover ships look like and it's been a blast. I was in a total art funk until this came along and doing these sketches has re-energized me. Maybe it's because this is for a more cartoony project instead of the usual realistic stuff. The ships are supposed to be put together from pieces of junked ships and some of them are personalized by the users with objects or paint.

Float Plane and some other recent things

After weeks of staying away from the Float Plane piece because I had hit a major wall with it, I suddenly found my way and finished it during the last few days. I had posted a sketch of it back in May and I'm glad I was able to get it done. During my time away from the Float Plane I started to work on Maya again (yes, I did hate it in school but I figured I'd give it another shot on my own terms and not without the stresses of school to interfere). I did a few tutorials and I started to model the train I had drawn a while back because I figured the train would be a lot of simple shapes and maybe it'd be easy for a Maya Noob like me. How wrong I was.....but I'm still enjoying it more than I did in school and this is what I have so far. It has a ways to go of course. The last one is a photoshop painting of a model I built and took photos off for reference. I really enjoyed it and I think it's something I'll do more off with my models.

Dante's Inferno work

I recently got permission to show just few Dante's Inferno things that wouldn't really give away anything from the game. I worked mostly on environments and props for the game with a few creatures/characters here and there. Above there's really fugly creature that eventually didn't make it into the game, a door guardian (you can see him briefly in the gameplay trailer that's out online), a lava cauldron, and a house which is one of the few things that isn't in hell in the game. There's a lot more but that stuff I'll have to wait to post up when the game comes out.

I was playing some DBZ Burst Limit on the 360 today and it all came back to me how much I used to like Vegeta when I was a kid. Never really liked Goku too much, except when he did the teleportation Kamehameha in Cell's face, but I won't get into my past DBZ nerdiness at this time.

I recently did some freelance work for an architecture firm because they needed an architectural rendering of the interior for one of their projects. It was interesting to do because they gave me some photos pasted together and I had to light the interior and touch everything up.

A little experimenting using photos since I've been seeing a lot of movie art incorporates photos. Hard to get the right ones at the right angles though.

Inferno

Now that the Transformers trailer came out I'm starting to get that Transformers fever that eventually leads to me spending money on toys, so to try and avoid that I'm trying to take that and put that energy on paper instead. One of my favorite transformers growing up was Inferno, the firetruck, just because he was a fire truck and big fire trucks were the shit when I was a kid. So....here's a sketch I did of what he looks like in my mind, if he were to appear in the movie. I kept the little "wings" and the cannon arm he had in the cartoon.

Edit: Added "robot being built" which slowly turned into a red transformer....maybe Inferno? probably.

Robotech....for reals!

I wanted to mess around with photos so I got a picture of an F14 fighter Jet which was the basis for the Robotech/Macross Jets and decided to try and modify it to make it look as if it could exist. It's not done yet, if you get close the photoshop areas look pretty loose. I put the picture of the original jet too, as well as the inspiration for it.

A friend emailed me the link to the Max Payne trailer and even though I don't expect much from the movie it did have some cool visuals. Plus I got the song stuck in my head and found out it's If I Was Your Vampire by Maryln Manson. I drew this sketch inspired by the trailer and the song...resulting in a flaming rubble with an angel-type thing in it.

Got out to get some fresh air recently and did some sketching of people and also started to thumbnail stuff out for more ping pong characters. I wrote down the type of characters I want to draw, so now it's just a matter of getting to it. Also finished the 1/48 scale F4u5 Corsair in markings from Argentina so now I can say I have a model from my homeland :)

Here's an art test I just did for a company that's opening up here in the bay area. The task was to do an interior of a hospital similar to the sims but make it a satire on american culture. Hopefully the humor isn't too dark....just can't help it.

Trains come from big caves, specially armored trains with cannons....

This is the scene with the armored train I did on the previous post, and if you look closely you can see "shooter" in there as well. I was thinking this is a secret government project that "Shooter" oversees and right now the train is ready get going from it's secret cave. I tried to keep this painting a little looser than my usual environments and I used some new brushes I got which made this fun to paint.

Below the painting are two large scans from model airplane box covers done by my favorite artist Shigeo Koike. He's a japanese aviation artist and all he does is paint airplanes for calendars and model box covers. He paints in acrylic and I will someday steal his skills and take over his position :) Check out the link too to see more of his work.

Western theme

This week I started working on a Western themed project that I could get characters, vehicles, and a scene from. So far I got this one guy called "Shooter" Willingham, and gun train that'll be in the moment piece. I thought the train could carry a turret similar to the one on the u.s.s Monitor during the civil war, as seen on the ref photo, but not as big.

Newbies

I've been working on adding some characters and vehicles to my portfolio so I went back to things I had been working on before and decided to flush them out. The old ping pong sketches I did a while back were good to go back to and I chose one of the characters to finish up, then I did a british soldier who uses alien technology to upgrade himself. The soldier goes with the idea I had of the WW1 alien robots/germans vs. allies. Looking at the way Italians camuflaged their planes in WW2, I colored my desert fighter to resemble that look. Finally there are more pics from the fly-in. One is the cockpit of the b24 and the other is my girlfriend looking tough holding a 50 cal machine gun off the side of the B24. She won't post it online so I figure I would :)

It's been working out nicely that since my last day at EA last week there have been 2 airshows/fly-ins for me to go to. On Friday a b25, b24, b17, and p51 flew in to moffett field to give rides and tours for a week, so now I have some WW2 warbirds flying over my apt daily....:) Back to work on the portfolio...

Return of the old hobby

I recently started building models again after not doing it for around 10 years and I enjoy it now more than ever. The top pics are of my recently finished Dewoitine D. 520, which was a ww2 french fighter plane. The bottom ones are of an F4U Corsair (american ww2 fighter) which was an old model I had built years ago but it looked crappy so I repainted it and re-applied decals as my warm up before returning into model building. I bought 2 more models so I got plenty to do whenever I have free time for the next month or two!

Dead Space

Normally I wouldn't post work related art, but since these pieces were used by EA as part of their online publicity stuff I've been given permission to post them on my blog and use on portfolio. The top image is actually the first artwork I did for the game, which was funny because the art director told me to make a room where there are dead babies and body parts used for cloning. That was nice intro into the horror genre....

The next one is a room where navigation is planned out, if I remember right. The final one is a hallway that leads to a tram station. That last image was the first time I heavily used textures on a photoshop piece. Lots of texture for grime and blood were provided by the reference folder. Also, the last 2 images were done over a basic maya footprint which was also new to me. All cool stuff to learn.

Keep an eye out for the game on halloween, it's looking really scary and bloody! delicious.

Planes, robots, and......Gigi

To get myself inspired again I revisted an older project I had done in school about WW1 robots and planes. This time I thought of it as a comic since the last time I worked on this I had done a moment piece for the Acme thing at school. I don't think I'll tighten this up or anything, just keep working on it from now and then to make myself artistically happy. The other image is a photo compilation using some research photos and my girfriend's pug Gigi. I call it "Gigi war zone", and it's my masterpiece.

Ping Pong Rally

I've been loving ping pong lately, and I was thinking of doing some international players...first off is the chinese champion whose name I don't know yet. Then there's the German "wunderkind", and the Boss man who's the equivalent of M.Bison but for ping pong. The big headed guy is a nerd who never had the physical ability to do well in the sport so he used his scientific knowledge to bypass that obstacle. The girl is the French teenage ping pong prodigy, who also uses her pug to help her out if she can't reach a ball (it's not cheating in my ping pong world ).

There's a pretty badass ping pong game for xbox 360 from Rockstar of all studios, I recommend it as a rental.

Simpsons game

Over the summer I was taken off the Dead Space project for around 2 months to help finish up the Simpsons game along with a lot of other artists. We all helped out to finish an insane ammount of backgrounds for the FMV's and it was a pleasure to work on that project and meet some new artists and art directors. Here are some examples of FMV backgrounds that I did which are a lot different than stuff I usually do. I recommend you rent or buy the game, it's really fun specially since the show's voice actors do the voices in the game!

Bad guy

This character is related to the drawing I posted earlier of the Aeroman, meaning that this would be the bad guy to fight Aeroman. I was sketching him and I got the urge to try and make him look sort of cell shaded, like the Simpsons video game that'll be out soon. Drawing super realistic at work is actually making me want to draw differently for once, something I hated doing in school. Hopefully I'll finish this guy out soon.

Ghost Hunter interior

This is the Ghost Hunter interior drawing but painted over. I tried to keep it looser than my other paintings and I also played around with some photo textures on this one. It's sort of like an art guinea pig, and I think it's heading the right way but it'll take some more work to make it complete. Getting the underwater feel was hard, and I think I have to change the actual color of the water that you see at the top. Oh, and one more thing........GO WARRIORS!!!

Over the past month or so one of the BFA assignments has been to design a team of ghost hunters from the Victorian time perios who live in Paris. So far this is what I've come up with and there are still corrections to be made that I received from critiques regarding what they wear and posing. Korean War ass kicking comic

I don't really have anything worth posting as far as new artwork goes.....so I figure I would reach deep into my archive of childhood comics again to get material to post. This comic was one I did around the same time as the Vietnam one but it's about me being a pilot during the Korean war. Since we've been assigned a really cool project for BFA, I decided it was time to end my little personal project because it's been slowly eating away at the time I spend on school assignments. I'm happy with how far I took this piece from the sketch it was before, so I'll put it to rest so it won't interfere with Dela's class. No more airplanes or robots for a while now, only school!

Here's a recent BFA class project for Dela where we had to design a hole for a miniature golf course. The painting was crazy to do and it's not even done yet, it looks very graphic since I had to block everything in. I want to add textures to the bills as well as a lot of other things. Hopefully I can go back to it later to rework it since we're starting a new project this week.

I was doing another WWI planevs. giant german alien robots sketch when I remembered I had with me a bunch of comics I had drawn when I was in elementary and junior high school. I scanned the cover and one page of a comic I did called Air War Vietnam, about a fighter pilot (of course) and hopefully you can read some of the dialogue and laugh at it like I do. I think I did it when I was in 6th grade maybe. The one page I put up I chose because it was inspired by the famous Top Gun locker room scene, but mine is better because the guys go for a walk and then a plane almost crashes on them. Awesomeness!

I hit one of those "I can't draw today" moments so I started doodling some robot since I had just seen the Transformers movie trailer. A few weeks ago I was talking with JP about an idea where some hikers come upon Noah's Ark, so I decided to do some viz dev for it as a side project since the idea had potential for some cool images. Anyways, here's my take on it and I'll probably do some more stuff on it.

Bond, James Bond

I saw the new James Bond movie and I loved it, so I had to get the James Bond stuff out of my head so I could focus on school again. Here's a quick little 007 type scene, with the usual scientist being surprised by the secret agent. Maybe I'll go back to this later and finish it out.

I went back to the Heart Of Darkness project to get motivated because I'm not liking the current BFA project too much. Some photoshop work over a thumbnail I never got the chance to work on during that project, more for mood than for detail.

This time for BFA I tried leaving the pencil line out of the character drawing. This guy is a Turkish assasin who in a short story is described as "a tiny man" who "smokes" and "has a spiked rope". The rest I took the liberty to make stuff up, and I'll keep working on this later this week.

The Shack

I colored the shack last night so I could show it in transmission today, so now I gotta do the BFA assignment overnight because I took too long with the shack. Damn. There's issues with the shack drawing like the hat sticking out too much, scale of the rifle, and clarity among other things, but for now it'll stay this way until I can make some time to fix it up.

I finished touching out a piece for the last BFA assignment today. This time I was playing around with an orange sky for this scene in Heart Of Darkness where Marlow's boat encounters a French warship. I think I need a darker core shadow on the hull of the boat, but I'll get to that later. Haven't been able to do much because all we do in BFA are b.s group projects and I've been doing story boards for the last 2 weeks. Hope to put more stuff up soon!

Pepe and his knife

This week I kept myself busy working on another character, this time Pepe from the new story assigned to us in BFA. Pepe is a 19 year old who lives near Monterey on a farm and is anxious to prove his manhood. He has a switchblade knife he plays with and later he uses it to kill someone because he was "a man". He sounded like a dumb guy to me, so I tried to make him look not too bright. He looks older than 19 even though I tried to keep him looking young, sucks.. Gotta keep practicing them characters......

My goal for friday is to have a character (or 2) and an environment to turn in. Here's another shot at a character and this time I tried to work a little looser, but I still left the pencil lines in it. The next one try doing without the pencil lines to see if it'll turn out better.

Captain Marlow

Here's captain Charlie Marlow, who in The Heart Of Darkness navigates the steamboat I drew earlier through the Congo river. I drew him after he's returned to England and he's getting ready to go meet Kurtz's widow in order to pass on the letters Kurtz gave to him before he died. I have to improve my character drawings because as you can see they come out pretty stiff and "zombie-like", so maybe I'll do one a week if the BFA assignment is boring or dumb.

We got our first class assignment for the Heart Of Darkness project last Friday and I have to do 3 rough viz dev layouts/environments for this Friday. I really wanted to draw the steam boat in the story so I did some research and did this yesterday and today. I can't resist drawing vehicles.....oh well. I'll try and post BFA stuff as the semester goes along, now back to work.

Tommorow is my last day at Factor 5 before I go down disneylan for some r&r. I probably won't post for a while since I'll be away and then I'll be getting ready for BFA, so here are some sketches I've done in the last few days during breaks at the internship and the final Lava Spartan drawing. Today I found out that a former classmate and really cool guy as well as awesome artist, Dave Coffman, had heart surgery and suffered some strokes while recovering. We should all take a moment to wish the best for Dave and hope he recovers.

Lava Spartan and Sketch

I've worked on the Lava Spartan some more during lunch breaks and I'm enjoying trying to make him look like he's made out of lava. I realized yesterday when I was working on it that it's starting to remind me of that big monster thing from LOTR, but I guess lava creatures are a common idea. During short breaks where I wait for the Maya stuff to process I do little sketches, so I did a WWI-era pilot sitting on top of his plane's cockpit. Maya= sadness, airplanes= happiness.

Lava Spartan WIP

yesterday I was thinking of something to draw on photoshop during lunch using some Lava reference when I thought of the SJSU spartan logo. The result being a spartan emerging from lava to do battle. So far I've put two lunch breaks into it so I'm going to finish this one out eventually because I'm interested in doing the lava, so hopefully by sometime next week it'll be done. It's too hot to paint outside!

Today was too hot to paint outside so I stayed inside and painted on photoshop for an hour while I ate leftover burgers and chicken wings from the bbq at Jens' yesterday. I sketched something quick and then took colors from photos of the kuwaiti oil fields on fire to try and portray a desert type environment with smoke covering most of the sky.

Since the concept phase of the game is over, I've been trying to do as much drawing for myself during lunch as I can. I put some color in the line drawing I had earlier by looking at some s screenshots from movies to get the mood, but I might not take it farther than this. I'm enjoying painting outdoors during lunch more than sitting in and drawing on the computer.

End of plane & new project

Today I got to the point where I felt like adding anything else to the drawing was going to make it look worse, so for now I'll leave it like this. Once I learn more photoshop skills I can go back and make it look nicer, but right now the more I add to it the tighter and uglier it gets. So now it's time to work on something else....so I sketched this to paint over on my lunch breaks. I'm going to try and do some dramatic lighting with this, so it's going to be a struggle. The fact that for some reason there are tons of little baby spiders coming down on my desk and my head at work isn't making things easier. WTF!

Today Wayne was showing me some tips on line quality and he did that little face drawing in like 20 seconds.
Back to the ongoing airplaen....Dave Yee kept telling me to add a background to the plane, so I did. I think I might stay with the no float version of the plane and do some kind of dogfight scene. My original idea was to do a low altitude shot, but now it's turned into a high altitude scene.

Here's how the plane is coming along. I took out the pilot, it was looking shitty. I put a circle for the propeller spin so later I can use that as a guide when I draw those in. I took out the float to see how it would look as a regular monoplane...but I think I still prefer to have the floats on.

During my lunch breaks at the internship I've been working on this airplane photoshop drawing. I try and do maybe 45 min each day, but usually it's only 3 times a week. Hopefully by the end of the internship I'll have it finished. So far I laid out the drawing and rough color and I'm starting to render it more from the front towards the back.

Here's a sketch I did of a shed in Santa Cruz and a 1hr painting I did in SJ. I'm trying to go back to more pencil sketching because I realized I was drawing a lot in pen recently. Also, this summer my goal is to do a little painting every weekend, maybe 1 to 2 hrs apiece. I need to improve my color skills so now's the time to do it before BFA starts!

Spent some time at the boardwalk the other weekend sketching for Barron's class, then put together some of the sketches on the computer. Got some more sketches from a pottery pitfire too, but I'll scan those later. Animation class is pissing me off, so I'm trying to go out and sketch more instead of doing the homework.....haha.

Here's a drawing for Viz Dev class from last semester. It's a Russian experimental facility within an old town, somewhere in Eastern Europe during the 1980's. The story is about a spy that breaks in and steals a jetpack.
